We've spoken previously about choosing your ceremony songs, how to choose, what to consider, and also given suggestions, so we thought it was time to give you First Dance inspiration. For many people choosing a First Dance song is almost as difficult as choosing a song to walk down the aisle to - what song do you love enough to mark it as 'your song'?
It also comes down to what kind of first dance you want to have. Are you thinking a slow sway across the dance floor, an upbeat singalong number, or are you the kind of couple to do a full on choreographed dance? Much like any moment of your wedding day, you can inject your personality into it!
Classic Choices
We're starting off with the most popular First Dance songs, ones that have stood the test of time, and are good to fall back on if you're struggling to make a decision on a song. They don't call them the classics for nothing!
At Last - Etta James
This is THE love song, the classic to end all classics, one of the most beautiful love songs, and so perfect for your first dance. You can't go wrong with a bit of Etta.
Endless Love - Lionel Richie & Diana Ross
What a duet. Two icons of the 70s coming together to record one of the most gorgeous love songs of all time. This song has stood the test of time for a reason.
Let's Stay Together - Al Green
Silky vocals, smooth instrumentation, and lyrics all about a lasting love - doesn't this song just scream romance? One of the Motown greats.
Modern Classics
These are the songs that have been released more recently, but quickly cemented themselves as popular choices. Songs that will likely become classics as the years go by due to their beautiful lyrics and arrangements.
Perfect - Ed Sheeran
We couldn't have done a list of first dance song choices without including Ed. He is the KING of wedding music, with every album he releases, he brings out a new selection of beautiful love songs that every couple can relate to.
All Of Me - John Legend
What else is there to say about this song? Just stunning in every way possible, John Legend really captures the feeling of everlasting love in this song, even 10 years from it's release, it's still a top 10 choice for weddings.
Better Together - Jack Johnson
A folky, 2000s guitar-based track, with gorgeous lyrics, and is a little more mid-tempo, which is great if you're wanting something that doesn't feel quite so slow! A super cute, but underrated choice.
Upbeat Tunes
Alright, this is where things start to get a little bit different. If you're not the kinda couple who likes swaying, and you want to keep your first dance fun and lighthearted, these songs might be a fab choice for you!
A Sky Full Of Stars - Coldplay
Simply put - a banger. This song starts off slow, then gets gradually more upbeat, meaning you guys get your moment together, then your guests can join you when the beat drops!
Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher & Higher - Jackie Wilson
A Motown classic, no one can resist a bit of Jackie Wilson. This is guaranteed to get your guests itching to join you on the dancefloor, however the lyrics are also gorgeous, and so fitting for your wedding day.
Accidentally In Love - Counting Crows
You've found your ogre, you're about to ride off into your swamp, but first it's time for your first dance, there is only one song to pick, this one obvs. Again, super fun, upbeat, it's irresistibly danceable, and a super memorable choice.
Something a bit different?
The songs we've listed so far are pretty popular and well known choices - songs that we have performed at countless weddings, however this section is full of the songs that we think would be a super fun choice, and maybe a little different to the usual.
You Sexy Thing - Hot Chocolate
Depending on your age you'll either remember this as a disco classic, or that YouTube video of a cartoon mouse trying to escape a mousetrap - either way this is a memorable song, and a proper fun choice. Definitely not one that your friends and family would expect, but maybe that's what you're after!
Conversations In The Dark - John Legend
John Legend is one of the most popular artists of the 2000s, his songs are some of the most chosen for weddings. This song has a similar feel to his most popular hits, but is unknown by most people, giving you a song that feels more like yours, and is less overplayed.
Love On Top - Beyonce
Beyonce fans, this is for you. An infectious dance floor filler of a song, perfect if you're looking for something really lighthearted. Invite your guests up to scream the chorus along with you, and have a boogie. You could also choreo an awesome routine to this song - maybe look at the music video for inspiration?
500 Miles - Sleeping At Last
Who knew this song could be so romantic? It's crazy what a stripped back arrangement can do for a song, and this one is beautiful. It really draws your attention to the lyrics, which actually is perfect for capturing that feeling on your wedding day.
2 Become 1 - Spice Girls
I bet you thought Spice Girls could only work when the party starts, but oh no, Spice Girls is appropriate at any time of day. This song is all about 2 people becoming 1, which is pretty much what happens on your wedding day, or night...
Do any of these songs float your boat? Or alternatively have you chosen any of these songs for your first dance? Let us know your thoughts, as we may do a part two of this - there are so many amazing songs out there, it's all about finding them!
